Soliana Makonnen

  • Omo Tribe woman from Ethiopia leaves her house wearing nothing but statement jewelry and traditional body art. We are proud of her Boldness, Praise and respect her for preserving our culture. Yet I was told to cover up while fully dressed for showing skin. This never made sense to me. OMOdern is the future, It’s a balance where two extremes evolve and coexist beautifully.
There is depth in each look. She’s fully dressed with her skin showing through the pattern of the cultural body art pattern embroidered on the fabrics.

  • The stiff 3 dimensional structures ,cut outs and sharp angles inspired by Ethiopian church architecture were softened by the flowy drape inspired by the ‘’netela’’ traditionally used to cover up. The Bold and loud unapologetic shoulders toned down by calming colors and the strap that represents safety ,this strap is used by mothers to secure her children around her back. The circles all over are to represent the circle rings omo women put in their mouth.
